A Hint of Gamer Dad

I started this blog out of a sense of giving up time while gaining a family, but it is nice to see that these things can be combined occasionally. Surprisingly, the kids come asking to paint and build model tanks with me. So in the past month we've

built a 1:72 Supermarine Spitfire

Many thanks to my step parents for gifting this one bringing this as a gift!

and GW Skaven warriors

built and painted M3 half tracks

while I worked on two M3A4 Shermans

which the kids can paint as well. The advantage of US plain colour scheme is apparent immediately.

And to top off last Sunday,

we built bows and arrows in the woods

Not so bad at all.

  1. Always good to combine both kids and the hobby

    1. It's something I didn't dare to expect, and I'm extremely weary to force it upon them. But to have it happen naturally is a stroke of good luck!

  2. It's good to see parents interacting with their kids and having shared interests. I've worked with no end of kids who live virtually separate lives from their parents. Good job!

    1. In the Dutch middle class environment I am familiar with, kids are the Big Project, so they get a lot of attention. Maybe that changes when they go to secondary education, but so far, I think parents pay rather too much than too little attention to their kids. Much more than previous generations at least

  3. It's great fun. My son is almost 8 and shows an interest in gaming. We're also having his birthday party in the garden with plans to cook on a campfire and make bows and arrows. We've already built a shelter using branches from the trees at the bottom of the garden.

    1. What I worry about is that kids of about 9 years of age in Dutch middle class upbringing have birthday parties of building shelters and laser gaming. This was the kind of stuff that was only available when I was grown up or when you were a teenager in the scouts. What kind of birthday parties will they expect when they are 15? We may be laughing about Sweet 16 parties on MTV now, but in a decade, that will happen in Europe as well (privileged kids of course)
